100th birthday: Hilmar Hoffmann

He was both a bold visionary and and an energetic pragmatic, who always followed his own motto "Culture for All" and over several decades paved new ways of access to art and education: Hilmar Hoffmann (1925-2018), who would have turned 100 on August 25 this year, decidedly shaped the cultural landscapes and policies of the Federal Republic of Germany. Whether as founding director of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, head of the culture department of the city of Frankfurt on the Main or president of the Goethe Institute – the social democrat Hoffmann was respected beyond party lines, and in the interest of culture, he could act just as integrative and as decisive. The unique Museumsufer in Frankfurt, a string of cultural institutions along the bank of the Main river, is probably the most impressive part of his legacy. It is also the location of the DFF – Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum – which counts filmportal.de among its departments -, the house for film that Hoffmann planned with great foresight. Thus it is very fitting that on August 25, the DFF will dedicate an evening with panel discussion and short film program to him under the title "Media literacy and Museumsufer – 100 Years Hilmar Hoffmann".

In Simmern im Hunsrück gingen am Wochenende die Heimat Europa Filmfestspiele (8. bis 23. August 2025) zuende. Das Filmfestival hat im siebten Jahr seines Bestehens erneut einen sehr starken Zuschauerzuspruch erfahren und mit fast 4000 Besucher*innen die Zahlen der Vorjahre übertroffen.

"Medienbildung und Museumsufer" sind Thema des Panels, zu dem das DFF aus Anlass des 100. Geburtstag Hilmar Hoffmanns am Montag, 25. August, um 19 Uhr ins Kino des DFF einlädt: Kulturdezernentin Dr. Ina Hartwig und die Museumsdirektorinnen Dr. Annabelle Hornung (Kommunikationsmuseum) und Christine Kopf (DFF) gehen im Gespräch mit Cornelia Klauß (Akademie der Künste, Berlin) der Frage nach, wie aktuell Hoffmanns Ansatz der "Kultur für alle" heute noch ist.

"In die Sonne schauen" ist der deutsche Beitrag für die Oscars® 2026

Der Spielfilm "In die Sonne schauen" von Mascha Schilinski wird für Deutschland bei der 98. Oscar®-Verleihung in der Kategorie "Best International Feature Film" ins Rennen gehen. Eine von German Films berufene, unabhängige Fachjury hat dies entschieden. Insgesamt wurden 5 Filme für die Auswahl eingereicht.
