70th Birthday: Axel Milberg

German-speaking audiences know him best as detective Klaus Borowski in the long-running German crime series "Tatort," or as the father in the popular TV comedy franchise "Familie Bundschuh." However, Axel Milberg's range as an actor extends far beyond these familiar roles. He first made a major impression on moviegoers in the coming-of-age comedy "It's a Jungle Out There" (1995), playing a middle-aged father who rediscovers his youthful spirit through his rebellious daughter. Since then, Milberg has brought remarkable versatility to the screen, equally convincing as sinister villains, kindhearted eccentrics, and quietly offbeat everymen. He portrayed a psychopathic killer in the television remake of "Es geschah am hellichten Tag" (1996), the unconventional Lucas Montrose in the fantasy adaptation "Ruby Red", and the father of the sexually uninhibited heroine in the bestselling novel adaptation "Wetlands" (both 2013). In recent years, he has appeared only occasionally in feature films, aside from a memorable supporting role as a state premier in "When Will It Be Again Like It Never Was Before" (2022). That is about to change, however: Milberg will soon return to the big screen in a leading role as part of the ensemble cast of the sports comedy "Adam's Eight," opening in September.
