Now at the Movies: Highly Explosive

The Schanzenviertel is one of the liveliest districts in Hamburg - but in Kerstin Polte's new film "Highly Explosive", life in the neighborhood suddenly comes to a standstill when an aerial bomb from the Second World War is found during construction work. During the evacuation of the area, the paths of several people cross. The focus is on a bomb disposal expert (Anne Ratte-Polle), who in fact should not be handling bombs at all, because of her mental health problems... But even more beyond the specific location of the discovery, Polte unfolds a cleverly designed kaleidoscope of human fates, touching on a wide variety of topics, from the refugee crisis to dealing with serious illness, professional or private overload, loneliness and self-determination. What's remarkable is that the film avoids strident exaggerations, instead relying on the quiet power of the unspectacular and the everyday. By this way, Polte succeeds in creating a multi-layered picture of society that condenses certain conditions without distorting them. The strong ensemble includes Bernhard Schütz, Karl Markovics and Haley Louise Jones.

"In die Sonne schauen" erhält Jury Preis im Wettbewerb von Cannes
