The Roaring Fifties
Satire on the German economic miracle of the 1950s, loosely based on Johannes Mario Simmel's "Hurra, wir leben noch"
After the end of World War II, Jakob Formann returns home, works as an interpreter for the U.S. Army, and is able to swindle 40,000 eggs from the Army stockpile, which marks the beginning of a tremendous financial and social rise. Formann becomes a chicken farmer, rises to head of an egg production company, becomes a contractor, and finally a publisher. He enjoys all the comforts and debauchery that his luxurious life offers him, until the oil crisis of the 1970s puts an end to the economic boom and with it Formann's empire. But he is not at all sad about his retreat into private life with his childhood friend Julia, because in his heart he has always remained the petit bourgeois he was before his rise.
