Mein Führer - Die wirklich wahrste Wahrheit über Adolf Hitler

Deutschland 2006/2007 Spielfilm

My Führer – The Truly Truest Truth About Adolf Hitler

It is December 25, 1944, and Berlin lies in ruin and rubble. The Total War appears to be totally lost. Reich Propaganda Minister Dr. Joseph Goebbels realizes that the country needs to be jolted into action, and he already has an idea about how to do it. The Führer is to hold a flaming New Year's address in front of a fake cardboard image of undamaged Berlin which will be spread throughout the land by the weekly newsreel cameras in order to remobilize the masses for the war. There is only one problem: Adolf Hitler is only a shadow of his former "greatness"; demoralized and depressed, he has holed up in his office, completely avoiding the public. The only man who can help him now is the Jewish actor Adolf Grünbaum, who once taught Hitler how to act when he was beginning his political career. Goebbels has Grünbaum and his family released from Sachsenhausen concentration camp. But time is of the essence: in five days Hitler has to be in top form...

In this film Dani Levy takes up the tradition – for the first time in Germany – of (tragi-)comedies about the Hitler period: "I have tried to write like Karl May, who invented 'his' world of Indians and 'his' rabian world. The conditions and the story that are described in 'My Führer' are based on knowledge of those times, but freely invented. Why? Because for me the fantasy, the fable independent of any facts, might just be nearer to the truth. Or in other words: I do not want to accord this cynical, psychically desolate person the honour of a realistic depiction."
