Summary
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Jenny Erpenbeck, the film tells the story of a house on a lake near Berlin that, over the course of several decades, becomes a silent witness to German history. Its successive residents reflect the political and social upheavals of the 20th century – from the Weimar Republic to National Socialism and the Second World War, through division, the GDR period, and reunification. Their personal stories are closely bound to questions of belonging, loss, and new beginnings. As the country around them changes again and again, so too does the meaning of home – a concept continually renegotiated through the shifting lives of those who pass through the house.
