Now at the Movies: Smell of Burnt Milk

Women still play a subordinate role in the patriarchal world of farming – literally, because even today, it is traditional in many farming families for a son, rather than a daughter, to inherit the ranch. Seventeen-year-old Katinka (Karolin Nothacker) is confronted with this tradition in "Smell of Burnt Milk", even though she would actually like to run her parents' farm one day and is already helping her mother (Johanna Wokalek) very much. This everyday farm life is also the focus of Justine Bauer's debut film. Bauer, as her name suggests (Bauer means Farmer), comes from a farming family herself, so she knows what she is talking about, and this is evident in every second of the film. She captures the strenuous profession of her main characters in a mixture of documentary-like realism and gently poetic elevation, the latter of which does not have a romanticizing effect, but rather illustrates the unique beauty of this rural way-of-life. With the exception of Johanna Wokalek as the mother, almost all the roles are played by first-time amateur actors, especially the lead role of Katinka, which lends this fascinating and touching film an additional authenticity.
