Biography

Nikolai Müllerschön was born in Stuttgart in 1958. Starting out as an assistant director in the 1980s, he soon helmed films like "Orchideen des Wahns", "Ein irres Feeling" and "Operation Dead End". Müllerschön established himself as a television writer and director, working on the TV shows "Eine glückliche Familie", "Freunde furs Leben" and "Die Verbrechen des Professor Capellari", and shooting prime time dramas like "Frucht der Gewalt" or "Paul und Clara – Liebe vergeht nie". He also wrote numerous screenplays, including scripts for the conspiracy thriller "Feindliche Übernahme – althan.com" and the German-Brazilian co-production "Streets of Rio".

Müllerschön – who also directs for US television and has developed stories for Roland Emmerich's production company Centropolis – spent four years developing a film about German fighter pilot Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen. The Venice resident finally got his ambitious project off the ground: With Müllerschön directing his own screenplay, the spectacular WWI drama "Der Rote Baron" premiered in German cinemas in April 2008.

Müllerschön next directed the US production "Subject 15" (2010), which wasn't released theatrically in Germany. During the following years, he primarily worked for television, and his made-for-TV films include the comedies "Aber jetzt erst recht" (2010), "Doppelgängerin" (2010), "Hochzeiten" (2012) and the sequel "Hochzeiten 2" (2013).

Already in 2011, production began on the thriller "Harms", starring Heiner Lauterbach as a gangster who plans a spectacular robbery after being released from prison. The film premiered at the 2013 Munich Film Festival and was released in Summer 2014.

He next helmed the TV productions "Almuth & Rita" (2014), starring Senta Berger and Cornelia Froboess, and "Letzte Ausfahrt Sauerland" (2015), starring Heiner Lauterbach and Friedrich von Thun. Lauterbach also starred in Müllerschön's next theatrical release "Frauen" (2016), a comedy about three unlike men who discuss their respective views on women during an eventful car ride.
