The sisters-in-law Karin and Philippa and their childhood friend Gerhard are enjoying their retirement. None of them have children, but they keep busy running errands and gardening. In order to bring some variety into her everyday live, the free-spirited Philippa encourages Karin, who is annoyed by her husband, and Gerhard, who has recently been hit by the death of his partner, to apply to an agency as surrogate grandparents. And before they know it, the hitherto relaxed lives of the pensioners are thrown into unexpected chaos by their new grandchildren.
