Biography

Simon Ostermann was born in 1986 in Frankfurt am Main. He gained his first experience in the film industry as an intern. Starting in 2011, he worked as a production assistant and driver on numerous commercials as well as several feature films, including Dietrich Brüggemann's "3 Zimmer/Küche/Bad" ("Move," 2012).

With no prior directing experience, he applied to the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF in 2012 and was accepted right away. His student short film "Bamboule" (2014) screened at numerous international festivals. In 2016, his 30-minute feature "Route B96" won the Studio Hamburg Newcomer Award and the Audience Award for Best Medium-Length Film at the Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival.

With the 20-minute graduation film "Havarie Petite" (2019), a social drama told from a child's perspective, Ostermann completed his degree.

His first television project, "Deutscher" (2020, co-directed with Sophie Linnenbaum), a four-part miniseries about two neighboring families who react very differently to the electoral success of a right-wing populist party, earned him a nomination for the Directing Award from the German Academy for Television.

In the following years, Ostermann directed several episodes of the crime series "SOKO Potsdam" (2021) and "Ein Fall für zwei" (2022). His dramedy series "Oh Hell" (2022, co-directed with Lisa Miller) won the German Television Award for Best Comedy Series.

After further television work ("Browser Ballett", "Jugend – es ist kompliziert!"), Ostermann directed the critically acclaimed youth and school drama "Von uns wird es keiner sein" (2024, TV), starring Sabin Tambrea and Mariele Millowitsch. At the Filmfest Hamburg, the film received the Hamburg Production Award in the Television section.

He also created the science-fiction rom-com series "Stardust Hotel" for television, which premiered in May 2026. Shortly afterward, Ostermann's first theatrical feature film, the tragicomedy "Sommer auf Asphalt", starring Mala Emde and Christoph Maria Herbst, was released.
