When Marie visits her mother Anna Loeser in the sanatorium where she is being treated for depression, Anna has the feeling that she will never see her daughter again. A few days later, Marie′s body is found in a small lake in an isolated wooded area near Schwerin.

Robert Kunze, a business-man, who made a lot of money after the German reunification, had strangled her after losing his temper while trying to rape her. The police begin their investigations. The former crime inspector Kurt Wolf helps Norbert Michaelis, the new inspector from the West, in his investigations. Although they are really competitors, they now team up to find Marie′s murderer. Anna, however, also interferes in the investigations. She wants revenge for the death of her innocent daughter. When the murderer is apprehended but then set free by the court because of lack of evidence, Anna decides to take the matter into her own hands. But the moment of truth comes when she is finally standing opposite the murderer and pointing the gun at him. She only has to press the trigger - but will the fatal shot give her the longed-for revenge?
