Biography

Leon Ullrich was born on 18 July 1983 in Hamburg. He first studied Media Culture and German Studies at the University of Hamburg (2004–06) before training as an actor at Berlin's University of the Arts (UdK) from 2006 to 2010. During his studies he joined the ensemble of the Maxim Gorki Theatre (2008–10), appearing in a number of productions, including as Basta in "Ink Heart." From 2010 to 2012 he was a member of the acting company at Schauspielhaus Graz.

Following several early appearances in short films, Ullrich began working regularly in television and cinema from 2011. His initial screen roles included a police press officer in the television drama "Lösegeld" (2012), a demonstrator in the box-office success "Stromberg – Der Film" (2013), and a journalist in the satire "Er ist wieder da" ("Look Who's Back," 2015).

He secured his first leading screen role in the ZDF comedy series "Eichwald, MdB" (2015), portraying the titular politician's parliamentary aide. A second series was released in 2019, and Ullrich was recognised with the German Acting Award the following year for Best Actor in a Comedy Role.

Ullrich has remained consistently active on stage. Between 2014 and 2017 he appeared in a number of productions at Theater Bremen, including as Jack in "Brokeback Mountain" (2014) and as Agnes in "Nichts" (2014–16). At Berlin's Ballhaus Ost, he collaborated with Johann Kuithan on the documentary-theatre cycle "Das gute Leben" (2016–19), shaped from interviews conducted in public spaces and exploring a broad spectrum of lived experiences.

From 2016 to 2021 he held a recurring supporting role as a forensic technician in the Dresden episodes of "Tatort." Further ensemble work followed in the political crime series "ZERV – Zeit der Abrechnung" (2022) and the true-crime miniseries "German Crime Story – Gefesselt" (2022). He received a second German Acting Award in 2023 as part of the ensemble of the feature film "Sonne und Beton" ("Sun and Concrete") in which he portrayed a schoolteacher.

Ullrich has since taken on leading roles in the eight-part comedy series "Jugend – Es ist kompliziert!" (2024), centred on the existential anxieties of four Berlin Neukölln hipsters, and in Wolfgang Becker's 2025 adaptation "Der Held vom Bahnhof Friedrichstraße," in which he plays an unscrupulous journalist.

In 2025 he joined the permanent ensemble of the Landestheater Neustrelitz/Neubrandenburg.
