Biography

Birgit Möller, born July 4, 1972, in Osnabrück, started her career with an internship at a film production company. She then worked, from 1994 on, as a camera and stock assistant. At the same time, she enrolled for two years at Staatliche Fachschule für Optik und Film (SFOF) in Berlin. Möller subsequently went to Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie (dffb) in Berlin and studied Camera and Direction from 1997 to 2006.

Together with Ulrike von Ribbeck, Möller won the "First Steps Award" in the category commercial film for their Nike commercials "Heiser 1-3". Möller then made some short films and worked as a cinematographer for several movie and TV productions. In 2006, Birgit Möller made her feature film debut "Valerie" which is at the same time her graduating film for dffb.

The drama about the social decline of a former top model received very positive reviews and won several awards at international festivals. In the following years, Möller worked frequently as a cinematographer. For her work in Irene von Alberti's coming-of-age drama "Tangerine" (DE/MA 2008), she was awarded the Best Cinematography prize at the achtung berlin festival in 2009. Other films in this role include the fictional artist film "Das schlafende Mädchen" ("The Sleeping Girl", 2011), shot in documentary style, and Monika Treut's coming-of-age story "Von Mädchen und Pferden" ("Of Girls and Horses", 2014).

Möller has also directed several commercials, promotional videos (including VW China) and the TV show "Big Countdown" (2017). As cinematographer and co-director (with Cornelius Schwalm), she realized the award-winning film "Hotel Auschwitz" (2018), about a theater group preparing for a performance in Auschwitz. Her feature film, "Franky Five Star" (DE/FI 2022), a quirky story about a young woman with multiple personalities, won the Ecumenical Jury Award at the Max Ophüls Film Festival 2023 and the Audience Award at the Neiße Film Festival. It was released in November 2023.
