Biography

Anno Saul, born November 14, 1963, in Bonn, started to study at Munich’s Hochschule für Philosophie before he went to University of Television and Film Munich (HFF) where he studied in the department "Feature Film and Television Feature" from 1985 to 1990. In 1991, he won the Max Ophuels Prize for his short film "Unter Freunden".

Saul made his feature-length debut in 1995 with the TV movie drama "Und morgen fängt das Leben an" about a group of high school students whose private graduation party more and more escalates with arguments and jealousies. After several further TV movies, Saul finished his first film for the movie screen in 1999: "Grüne Wüste" ("The Green Desert") tells the story of a teenage girl whose boyfriend falls ill with leukemia. The film won the Audience Favorite Choice Award at the film festival in San Jose, California. Furthermore, Martina Gedeck won the Bavarian Film Award for her performance in the role of a mother.

After the TV movie "Die Novizin" (2002), Saul finished his second film for the movie screen, the comedy "Kebab Connection" that is situated in the neighborhood of Hamburg’s red-light district. Fatih Akin, among other writers, collaborated on the film’s screenplay. Saul’s next film was the quirky comedy "Wo ist Fred?" ("Where is Fred?"), starring Til Schweiger, Jürgen Vogel, and Alexandra Maria Lara, followed by several episodes of the TV crime film series "Der Kommissar und das Meer" (2007 to 2008). He then turned his focus back to the movie screen: "Die Tür" ("The Door", 2009), based on Akif Pirincci’s novel "Die Damalstür", tells the story of an artist who gets the opportunity to revoke his tragic past – with dire consequences.

"Die Tür" was awarded the Grand Prize of the Jury at the 2010 Festival International du Film Fantastique Gérardmer. Saul then served as director on several TV productions, including episodes of the TV series "Der Kommissar und das Meer" (2011), "Reiff für die Insel" and "Nord Nord Mord".

Saul returned to the big screen with the 2014 release "Irre sind männlich", a comedy about two playboys who fall in love with the same woman.
