Tobias Baumann was born in Koblenz in 1974. He started out as a writer for TV programs "RTL Nachtshow" and "Harald Schmidt Show" (Sat1). In 2002, he directed several episodes of the award-winning comedy show "Ladykracher". After helming the series "Ohne Worte" starring Bastian Pastewka, Baumann made his feature film debut with the 2004 box office hit "Der Wixxer". He continued to work in television, and eventually directed his second feature with the comedy "Vollidiot" ("Complete Idiot", 2007).

In addition to his work for "Ladykracher" and the equally popular series "Pastewka", Baumann also directed the award-winning, made-for TV movie "Zwei Weihnachtsmänner" (2008), several episodes of the drama show "Add a Friend" (2012/13) and the six-part science program "Die Insider" (2013).

Baumann returned to feature filmmaking with the adaptation of the children's book "Gespensterjäger" ("Ghosthunters – On Icy Trails"). Released in April 2015, the film tells the story of a frightful little boy who teams up with a friendly ghost to battle an evil specter.

Although the film was quite successful, Baumann worked exclusively for television in the following years. He directed the thoughtful comedy "Neid ist auch keine Lösung" (2016), starring Stefanie Stappenbeck as a woman in her late thirties experiencing a midlife crisis. He was part of the directing team for the sketch comedy series "Sketch History" (2019) and directed the dramedy miniseries "ÜberWeihnachten" ("Over Christmas") for Netflix. Also for television, he created the romantic comedy "Nestwochen" (2020), about a couple who take turns caring for their children after their separation, and the award-winning miniseries "Faking Hitler" (2021), which recounts the scandal surrounding the fake Hitler diaries in the early 1980s.

At the end of 2023, after eight years, Tobias Baumann made another film for the big screen: "791 km", about a group of very different people who form an impromptu taxi group from Munich to Hamburg.
