Biography

Luna Sofia Wedler was born in Zurich, Switzerland October 26, 1999 to a Swiss mother and a German father. She started her acting career when she was cast in a central role in Niklaus Hilber's award-winning youth drama "Amateur Teens" (CH 2015). After that Wedler appeared in a number of TV and feature film productions, among them the much-acclaimed crime drama "Zwiespalt" (CH 2017). She played her first lead role in Lisa Brühlmann's "Blue My Mind" (CH 2017), an award-winning fantasy drama about a 15-year-old, whose body suddenly starts to change radically. For her portrayal, Wedler won Best Actress at the Swiss Film Award 2018 and was elected one of the "European Shooting Stars" by the European Film Promotion (EFP).

Also in 2018, Wedler made an appearance in "Der Läufer" ("Midnight Runner", CH), a drama about a serial killer based on a true story, that premiered at the Locarno Film Festival. Shortly after, she starred in a lead role in the youth film "Das schönste Mädchen der Welt" ("The Most Beautiful in the World", 2018), a loose, modern adaptation of "Cyrano de Bergerac". For this role she won the prize of the public broadcaster Saarländischer Rundfunk (together with Aaron Hilmer) and the New Faces Award 2019 for Best Young Actress at the Günter-Rohrbach-Filmpreis.

In 2019 Wedler was seen in two leading roles on the big screen: In the dramatic love story "Dem Horizont so nah" ("So Near the Horizon") she embodied a fun-loving woman whose new love has been infected with HIV since childhood. In "Auerhaus" she belonged to a group of high school graduates whose dream of a rural flat-sharing community to escape from the restraints of a bourgeois society faces them with a number of problems and conflicts.

For these two roles, she received the Bavarian Film Award for Best Newcomer in April 2020. In summer 2020, the Netflix series "Biohackers" started, with Wedler in a leading role as a student who came into the world as the "product" of a gene experiment. Starting in May 2021, she portrayed Sophie Scholl in an Instagram project that depicts Scholl's final months of life in real time in honor of the Nazi resistance fighter's 100th birthday.

In the same year, Wedler received a nomination for the German Film Award for her leading role in the feature film "Je suis Karl" (2021). In it, she plays the relative of victims of a terrorist attack who drifts into the right-wing scene. For this role, she was nominated for the German Film Awards and won the Young Actor Award at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Film Art Festival.

At the 2022 Swiss Film Awards, Wedler received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as the estranged mother of a young boy in the coming-of-age drama "Soul of a Beast" (CH 2021). She also had important supporting roles as the title character's new girlfriend in "Der Passfälscher" ("The Forger", DE/LU 2022) and as a fairy in "Der Räuber Hotzenplotz" ("The Robber Hotzenplotz", DE/CH 2022). Furthermore, Wedler played a leading role in "Was man von hier aus sehen kann" ("What You Can See From Here", 2022) as the granddaughter of a villager (Corinna Harfouch) who can predict death in her dreams.

In 2023, Margarethe von Trotta cast her in a supporting role in the biopic "Ingeborg Bachmann – Reise in die Wüste" ("Ingeborg Bachmann - Journey Into the Desert," CH/AT/DE), playing Marianne Oellers, a literary translator who was married for several years to the writer Max Frisch. In her native Switzerland, Wedler appeared in two historical dramas: in "Jakobs Ross" ("Songs Within," CH 2024), set in the 19th century, she played a maid, while in "Landesverräter" (CH 2024), about the 1941 execution of Ernst Schrämli for alleged treason in favor of the Nazis, she portrayed his lover.

Wedler took on leading roles as a grieving sister in "Marianengraben" (LU/IT/AT 2024), as a socially committed student in the tragicomedy "Sie glauben an Engel, Herr Drowak?" ("You Believe in Angels, Mr. Drowak?" DE/CH 2024), and as the daughter of an alcoholic mother in the social drama "22 Bahnen."
