Biography

Julian Köberer was born in Frankfurt in 1985. Starting in 2006, he gathered professional experiences working on film productions. He was 2nd assistant director on Martin Repka’s Kinofilm "Rückkehr der Störche" (2006), and worked as an intern on the “Tatort” episode "Bevor es dunkel wird" (2007) and on "Kommissar Süden - Das Geheimnis der Königin" (2007). In 2007, Köberer directed his first short "Schweigen ist Gold".

In 2009, Köberer enrolled at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, where he studied directing. His student short "Meer zwischen uns" (2013) screened at the Max-Ophüls-Preis film festival. He went on to co-direct the feature-length documentary "Im Schatten Europas" (2014-2016), which addresses the plight of refugees at the fringes of Europe. His short "Radikal" (2016, co-directed by Arto Sebastian Buhmann) won the audience award at the 2017 Landshut Short Film Festival.

After he served as assistant director on "Die Weihnachtsgeschichte" (2016), which features the puppet play of the famous Augsburger Puppenkiste, he was chosen as director for the follow-up "Als der Weihnachtsmann vom Himmel fiel", which was released in December 2017.
