Biography

Christian Werner was born in 1978 in Rudolstadt, East Germany. After extensive travels in Asia and South America, he began studying visual communication at the Bauhaus University in Weimar in 1999. During his time there, he was introduced to directing by DEFA filmmaker Günter Reisch, who taught in Weimar. While still a student, Werner founded the production company acamara film in 2003 and made his first short films. In 2004 he graduated with a diploma in film and photography.

From 2007 to 2015 Christian Werner studied directing at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. His mid-length feature film "Monika" (2011), which explores the self-discovery of a blind young woman, received the Defa-Förderpreis and was named Best Mid-Length Film at Filmz, the Festival of German Cinema in Mainz. Werner's graduation film "Fremdkörper" ("Foreign Body", 2014), which tells the story of a man who meets the organ donor of his illegally acquired kidney, received the Audience Award for Best Medium-Length Film at the Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival.

In the following years, Werner directed several episodes of the TV series "SOKO Stuttgart" (2018) and "Rampensau" (2019). His first full-length feature film "Irgendwann ist auch mal gut" ("It's Gonna Be Fine"), about a mortician whose parents plan to commit suicide together, premiered at the Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival in January 2020.

The following year, he directed "Kommt ein Vogel geflogen," a tragicomedy about a stressed-out manager of an animal shelter with a Jewish family whose new parrot suddenly starts shouting Nazi slogans. Prior to the release of this film, Werner directed the tragicomic love story "Kleine Eheverbrechen" (2022) for television, starring Emily Cox and Philipp Hochmair, which was broadcast on German TV in May 2023. In the fall of the same year, "Kommt ein Vogel geflogen" was theatrically released.
