On a large construction site for a new industrial complex in Schwedt an der Oder, engineer Tom Breitsprecher and FDJ secretary Grit get to know each other. Tom is a fine engineer but is not interested in politics. He is upset by the carelessness and the incapability of the youth brigades. Grit has fled from a marital crisis to the construction site. There, she gets involved in a tentative flirt with Tom who is known to be a womanizer. But soon, they become more and more affectionate for each other. Grit gets in conflict with the staunch moral values of the 1950s: the collective expects from her that she leads an exemplary life – professionally as well as personally. But Grit stands by her love and takes a firm stand.
