Summary

The Big Shadow

Conrad Schroeter is a great actor and the artistic director of a Berlin theater. In the young Gisela Ahrens, whom he has recently brought to his theater, he not only sees a talented actress. Schroeter also feels that he has fallen in love with the woman. But to his great pain, Gisela turns to the scheming seducer Jürgensen, who has already driven Schroeter's daughter to suicide. One day, when Schroeter and Jürgensen face off as judge and defendant in the play "The Judge of Zalamea," Schroeter confuses the play with reality: in front of the audience, he accuses Jürgensen of murdering his daughter, and physically attacks him.

The performance is stopped and Schroeter is taken to a psychiatric hospital, while Jürgensen marries Gisela a short time later.
Schroeter's career is ruined. After his release, the broken man has to work as a prompter on a provincial stage. As fate would have it, Jürgensen is on stage one night in the very play that was the cause of the scandal. Will history repeat itself?
