Biography

Àlex Brendemühl Gubern was born in Barcelona on November 27th 1972. He was trained as an actor at the Real Escuela de Arte Dramático (RESAD) in Madrid, and started out as a voice talent in dubbing. Following his 1995 screen debut in "El perquè de tot plegat", he appeared in numerous Spanish film and television productions.

His breakthrough came with the leading role in "Las horas del día": His portrayal of an inconspicuous boutique owner, who turns out to be a serial killer terrorizing the citizens of Barcelona, won him a Barcelona Film Award and the Catalan Film Award Butaca for Best Actor. For his performance in the drama "53 días de invierno" (2006), Brendemühl again recieved the Butaca and the Barcelona Film Award, as well as the Sant Jordi Award for Best Actor.

In 2007, German director Franz Müller cast Müller Àlex Brendemühl as the male lead for his drama "Die Liebe der Kinder". Opposite Marie-Lou Sellem, he plays a worker, whose 17 year-old son falls in love with the daughter of his new life partner. The film premiered at the 2009 Munich Film Festival, and was released in Germany in August 2010.

Also in 2009, Brendemühl’s directorial debut, the short film "Rumbo a peor" shot in Spain in 2009, was released. In the next couple of years, he mainly worked in Spain as an actor starring in multiple feature films and TV productions. For his lead role in the docudrama "Les dues vides d'Andrés Rabadán" (ES 2010) about a patricide, he was awarded the Catalan film prize Gaudí. He received further Gaudí nominations for his roles in "El bosc" (ES 2012), a fantasy drama set in the Spanish civil war, and for the award-winning history drama "Stella cadente" ("Falling Star", ES 2014), in which he played Spanish King Amadeus I. His portrayal of the Nazi war criminal Josef Mengele in "Wakolda" ("The German Doctor", AR/ES/NO/FR 2013) about his time in Argentinia and his relationship with a clueless local family, won him an Argentinian film prize.

In German (co-)productions Brendemühl appeared mostly in bigger and smaller supporting roles, e.g. as a padre in "Die Vermessung der Welt" ("Measuring the World", 2012), as an art thief in "Nemez" (2012) and as the CEO of an NGO in "Hedi Schneider steckt fest" ("Hedi Schneider Is Stuck", DE/NO 2013-15). He played lead roles as the mysterious craftsman in "Die Abmachung" (2014) and as the husband and TV producer in the tragic comedy "Wann endlich küsst Du mich?" (2014-16). The thriller "Rewind - Die zweite Chance" (2015-17) with Brendemühl as the police inspector, who is investigating a mysterious murder case and gets the chance to change the past, premiered at the Hofer Filmtage 2017.

In the following years, Brendemühl took on a variety of roles, often in international productions. For instance, he portrayed the head of a Catholic rehabilitation center in the award-winning French drama "La prière" ("The Prayer", 2018), and a royal judge in the Spanish-Argentinian historical drama "Akelarre" ("Coven", 2020), which received multiple awards.

Among Brendemühl's German-language roles are that of a fraudulent doctor in the Dortmund "Tatort" episode "Inferno" (2019), the violent ex-partner of a single mother in "Der Taucher" (AT, 2019), and the boss and ex-partner of the main character in the relationship drama "Le Prince" (2021). In the eccentric Paradise tale "Die Tagebücher von Adam und Eva" ("The Diaries of Adam and Eve," 2023), he played Adam; in the drama "Hate Songs" (ES, 2024), set in Rwanda, he had a leading role as a Belgian sound technician working on a radio program aimed at addressing the genocide.
