Biography

Aaron Arens was born on August 4, 1988, in Zurich, Switzerland. He began his career in film at a young age as an actor, making his on-screen debut at 12 in Markus Imboden's modern adaptation of "Heidi" (CH/FR 2001), where he played Peter, Heidi's best friend. He returned to the screen in 2007 as part of the cast of Mike Eschmann's coming-of-age film "Breakout," set in Zurich. From 2010 to 2012, he starred in the Swiss daily soap "Best Friends," which focused on the everyday lives of students at a Swiss school. He also occasionally took on stage roles, including Puck in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Zurich Opera House in 2012.

In 2014, Arens began studying directing at the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF). During his studies, he directed several short films, including the 30-minute "I Grew a Statue" (2018), a surreal love story that screened at several international festivals and won the German Camera Award. Arens also worked as an editor on films by fellow students.

Alongside his studies, Aaron Arens appeared in various roles in both film and television, including in the award-winning Swiss comedy "Wolkenbruchs wunderliche Reise in die Arme einer Schickse" ("The Awakening of Motti Wolkenbruch", 2018) and the romantic comedy "Ich liebe alles, was ich an dir hasse" ("I Love Everything I Hate About You", 2018). In 2019, he secured a regular role as forensic technician Noah Löwenherz in the Zurich "Tatort" team.

After working as an editor on an episode of "SOKO Potsdam" in 2020, he directed two episodes of the crime series in 2021/22. In the fall and winter of 2022, he filmed his HFF graduation project, which also marked his feature film debut: "Sonnenplätze" ("Places in the Sun"), a drama about a dysfunctional family of artists. The film premiered in June 2024 at the Munich Film Festival, where it won the New German Cinema Award for Best Screenplay and the Starter Film Award from the City of Munich. "Sonnenplätze" was released in theaters in August 2024.
