Uli M. Schüppel, born 1958, initially studied liberal arts but went to Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (dffb) in 1984 to study directing. After his first short films and music videos, Schüppel dedicated himself to a portrait of the musician Nick Cave in his graduation film "The Road to God Knows Where". He then finished his first feature film "Vaterland" ("Fatherland") as well as further documentary and essay films.
In 1998, Schüppel together with producer Milanka Comfort set up the production company "deflex-film" that produced one of the first ever digital feature-length films, "planet alex". In the department of digital film, Schüppel also worked as an advisor and as a curator for the "b.film & digital vision Festival" in Berlin. He also regularly works as a guest lecturer at dffb since 2002. In 2005, he finished the film "Santos – Heldentaten die keiner braucht" together with Ben Becker and Peppi Streich. With his two next films, Schüppel took on two aspects of the Berlin music scene: in "BerlinSong" (2006/2007), he portrays six utterly different male and female musicians of Berlin’s underground scene of singer-songwriters; and in "Elektrokohle" (2008/2009), he follows the traces of the first GDR concert of legendary punk band "Einstürzende Neubauten" that took place on December 21, 1989.
