Stephan Schesch was born in Munich in 1967. He studied at the French Academie Carat, and subsequently worked in different departments for the TV networks RTL and Sat 1. During an internship at the Los Angeles based production company Film Roman – which is involved in the world famous cartoon "The Simpsons" – Schesch decided to pursue a career in animation. Form 1995 on, he worked as author, director, producer and CEO for several international production companies. In 1999, he founded Schesch Filmproduktion GmbH, which, among other projects, co-produced the TV feature film "Das Gespenst von Canterville" (2004). Based on Oscar Wilde's story, the film was a blend of live action and animation and went on to win the 2005 Bavarian Television Award.
As producer, Schesch enjoyed significant international success with "Die Höhle des gelben Hundes": The graduation film of HFF student Byambasuren Davaa turned out to be a box office hit and garnered numerous prizes, including the German Film Award for Best Children's Feature Film. Schesch also produced the animation feature "Die drei Räuber" (2007). Based on Tomi Ungerer's eponymous children's book, the film became a tremendous success, and with over 600.000 admissions in France alone, it was the most profitable animated feature film ever to come from Germany at the time of its release.
In 2009, Schesch began work on the animated feature film "Der Mondmann", again based on a novel by Tomi Ungerer. Apart from providing the screenplay and acting as co-producer, Schesch also took over directing duties. The film had its world premiere at the 2012 Annecy International Animation Film Festival and was released in March 2013.
