Biography

Sabine Lidl was born in 1970 in Seefeld. After training as a makeup artist, she began working freelance in 1992 and, from 1996 onward, regularly for cinema and television. Among her earliest film projects was Dani Levy's "Stille Nacht" ("Silent Night", 1996), which marked the beginning of a long-standing collaboration. Lidl was also responsible for makeup on Levy's "Meschugge" ("The Giraffe," 1998), "Väter" ("I'm the Father," 2002), "Alles auf Zucker!" ("Go For Zucker – An Unorthodox Comedy," 2005), and "Die Welt der Wunderlichs" (2016). Their professional collaboration developed into a personal relationship as well. By 2009 at the latest, Lidl and Dani Levy appeared publicly as a married couple; they have two children.

In addition to her work with Levy, Lidl collaborated repeatedly with Rainer Kaufmann, including on the comedy of mistaken identities "Der Job seines Lebens" (2003), the realist social drama "In aller Stille" (2010), and the lesbian coming-out drama "Ich will dich" (2014).

Lidl turned to directing in 2007, when she helmed the making-of documentary for Levy's "Mein Führer - Die wirklich wahrste Wahrheit über Adolf Hitler" ("My Führer – The Truly Truest Truth About Adolf Hitler") From 2010 onward, she directed numerous documentary portraits primarily for the cultural broadcaster Arte, focusing on figures such as Nan Goldin, Henry Hübchen, Emma Thompson, and Paul Auster. Her hour-long documentary "Doris Dörrie - Die Flaneuse" screened, among other venues, at DOK.fest München in 2024.

Lidl began work on her first feature-length documentary in 2023: "Siri Hustvedt – Dance Around the Self" (DE/CH), exploring the life, career, and work of the acclaimed American writer Siri Hustvedt. The film premiered in February 2026 in the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival, with its theatrical release following in April 2026. One month later, "Siri Hustvedt – Dance Around the Self" was honored as Best Documentary at the 2026 German Film Awards.
