Johannes Hegemann was born in Jena in 1996 and grew up in Zurich, Switzerland. In 2016, he began studying acting at the Zurich University of the Arts and moved to Rostock, Germany in 2018 to attend the University of Music and Theatre. During his studies, he appeared on stage at the Schauspielhaus Zurich and the Mecklenburg State Theater Schwerin. He also appeared sporadically in short films and music videos. Johannes Hegemann was a scholarship holder of the Friedl Wald Foundation and a study award winner of the Migros Kulturprozent 2018/19.
After graduating in 2020, Hegemann became a member of the ensemble of Hamburg's Thalia Theater. There he received the Boy Gobert Award in 2022 and was named Young Actor of the Year by Theater heute magazine. In the same year, he appeared in front of the camera for his first leading role in a feature film: in Andreas Dresen's "In Liebe, eure Hilde" ("From Hilde, With Love", start: 2024), he played the husband of Nazi resistance fighter Hilde Coppi.
