Ekrem Ergün grew up alternately in Turkey and Germany and gained his first theater experience as a child in Turkey. After graduating from high school, he began studying media studies in Potsdam, Germany, before transferring to the Berliner Schauspielschule in 2003. After graduating in 2006, Ergün had engagements at the Badische Landesbühne where he appeared in productions of Hans Weingartner's "Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei", Schiller's "Die Räuber", Darju Stocker's "Nachtblind" and in the title role of Mark Twain's "Tom Sawyer". He has also appeared in short films and web spots.
From 2013 to 2014, Ekrem Ergün studied directing at the New York Film Academy in the USA. He made his feature film debut with the youth drama "Hördur – Zwischen den Welten" (theatrical release: 2015). At the 2016 German Film Critics' Award, the coming-of-age story of a rebellious German Turk who finds herself through a friendship with a horse was awarded Best Children's Film.
In the following years, Ergün realized image films for Potsdam's Museum Barberini and was involved as a co-producer in Uli Gaulke's documentary "Sunset Over Hollywood" (2018) and Barbara Ott's social drama "Kids Run" (2020). In August 2022, he began shooting his feature-length theatrical film "Die unlangweiligste Schule der Welt," also a children's film. The film won the audience award at the Lucas 2023 children's film festival in Frankfurt. The theatrical release was in October 2023.
