Ben Sombogaart, born in Amsterdam on 8.8.1947, he took final school examinations and studied at the Dutch Film and Television School from 1969-73. He began his career making documentaries. Since 1981 he has directed numerous feature films, especially for children and young people. Many of his films were co-produced by Dutch television. Among the many accolades he has received for his work are the Unicef Award (Berlin 1997) and the Bernhard Wicki Award (Emden 2004). In 2004 his film, "De Tweeling" was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Foreign-Language Film.
