Biography

Andreas Goldstein, born 1964 in East Berlin to GDR cultural functionary Klaus Gysi and his wife, graduated from high school and trained as a type setter. He then went on to study cultural studies and drama in Berlin until 1991, before he studied directing at the Konrad Wolf Film and Television Academy in Potsdam-Babelsberg (today: Babelsberg Film University). In 1999 he became a master student at the Berlin Academy of Arts. In the same year he made his directorial debut with the 36-minute documentary "Die Erklärung des ersten Kapitels Luce" about the political significance of the peasant uprisings in the 16th century. In the next few years, Goldstein worked for the Berlin production company Next as a production manager and producer. There he also realized his own short feature film "Detektive oder Die glücklosen Engel der inneren Sicherheit" in 2006, which was named "Short Film of the Month" by the Wiesbaden Filmbewertungsstelle (FBW, German federal authority for evaluating and rating film).

In 2008, Goldstein founded the production company Oktoberfilm together with Susanne Binninger. Among other things, he produced the award-winning documentary "Werden Sie Deutscher" (2011, directed by Britt Beyer) and Binninger's TV documentary "Reine Männersache" (2011). In addition, he has been writing film-theoretical and film-critical texts. At the International Film Festival in Venice in 2018, Goldstein presented his first feature film as a director, the tragicomic drama "Adam and Evelyn" set in the GDR of 1989. A little later, at the Festival DOK Leipzig, his documentary film "Der Funktionär" (2018) premiered, which is a complex portrait of his father. "Adam and Evelyn" was released in German cinemas in January 2019, "Der Funktionär" three months later.
