No Mercy

Deutschland Österreich 2023-2025 Dokumentarfilm

Summary

The documentary takes as its point of departure a remark by the Russian-Ukrainian filmmaker Kira Muratowa, who once attributed a particular toughness to women working in cinema. Exploring this idea, Isa Willinger enters into conversations with internationally acclaimed directors such as Céline Sciamma, Alice Diop, Joey Soloway, Nina Menkes, Valie Export, and Virginie Despentes. In parallel-edited sequences, they speak about their working realities and cinematic approaches, addressing themes such as sexuality, violence, trauma, motherhood, resistance, and visions of the future, as well as their perspectives on the female gaze. The interviews are interwoven with a montage of scenes from their films and from Muratowa's work. Willinger's voice-over provides structure, repeatedly returning the film to its central question. Through the interplay of conversation and film excerpts, the documentary offers a layered insight into artistic practice, female experience, and the visual worlds shaped by both.
