Christine is quadriplegic and bound to a wheelchair. Searching for a cure, but also looking for a way out of her deeply felt isolation, she takes a pilgrimage to Lourdes, fuelled by her overwhelming wish for acceptance and a normal life. The young caretaker Maria accompanies her on the processions and on the trips to the spa and becomes the embodiment of youth and hope for Christine. But Maria longs for younger company, and gradually, the old and lonely Mrs. Hartl begins to take care of Christine, praying feverishly for her healing. Eventually, a miracle seems to occur when Christine recovers rapidly and even starts to walk again. But there are some doubts whether her condition will last.
