Summary

The Girl from the Marsh Croft / The Girl of the Moors

Helga Christmann, a maid, becomes pregnant by her employer and is driven from the farm. Helga refrains from suing the man because she does not want to force him to commit perjury. The people in the village, however, know that Helga is telling the truth. When the farmer's son Karsten Dittmar hires the young woman to work on his farm, Helga's fate seems to change for the better. But a short time later, Karsten's future wife Gertrud arrives at the farm and urges her fiancé to fire Helga.

Karsten gives in, plagued by remorse. One evening, Karsten and his friends get into a drunken argument with a group of sailors. The next morning, Karsten, who can barely remember the altercation, reads that one of the sailors has been stabbed to death. When he finds his knife with a broken blade, Karsten believes he is the culprit. He goes to court to turn himself in. Only Helga knows that Karsten is innocent, because she has the proof...
