Now at the movies: Hysteria

It begins like a near-documentary about the making of a film – but soon turns into a tense psychological thriller in which everyone suspects everyone else. At the center is Elif (brilliantly portrayed by Devrim Lingnau), an ambitious and conscientious production intern, full of drive as she works on a feature film about the 1993 racist arson attack in the German city of Solingen. But when a Qur'an is accidentally burned on set and Elif also loses the keys to the apartment of the director (Serkan Kaya) and producer (Nicolette Krebitz), the pressure mounts – and she starts making one mistake after another. Then the filmed material suddenly goes missing. Who could have stolen it – and why? In his second feature after the much-acclaimed "Oray," Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay creates a vivid panorama of paranoia and prejudice, probing the trigger points of many contemporary debates – from racism and Islamism to "woke" self-righteousness – and paints, with a touch of sharp satire, a portrait of a society on the verge of a nervous breakdown. The fact that "Hysteria" takes its characters and their motivations seriously while remaining a gripping film makes it one of the true standouts in this cinema season packed with new releases.

FILMZ startet in seine 24. Ausgabe

Am Abend des 6. November 2025 wurde im Kleinen Haus des Staatstheaters Mainz die 24. Ausgabe von FILMZ – Festival des deutschen Kinos feierlich eröffnet. Unter Beisein von Gäst*innen aus Politik und Kultur fanden sich zahlreiche Besucher*innen im nahezu komplett gefüllten Saal ein, um den Auftakt der Festivalwoche gemeinsam zu feiern.
