Summary
Brute
Gerry Bruttecki, known as Brute, is transported straight from a London prison to the dreariness of the Romanian backwoods. He lands in a run-down home for waifs and strays. He is supposed to work as a handyman and look after the children, some of whom are physically and mentally handicapped. The home is run by the shady Sincai and the alcoholic doctor Babits who
is aided by the nurse Mara. Soon after his arrival, an intimate
relationship develops between her and Brute. The children, who are
initially hostile to the stranger, soon regard him as a friend, and the
twelve year-old terminally ill gypsy girl Elena falls in love with
Brute. For her and the other children he becomes the personified dream
of a better life. But the home is not the right place for dreams:
children are sold for "adoption" to rich foreigners.
At first, Brute just wants to get away. But Brute becomes a changed
man, from the cool egotist to a man of action, when he sees how Elena
and the other children put their trust in him as their supposed
saviour.
