Summary

During a holiday in the countryside, a woman from the city starts an affair with a farmer. She urges the man to follow her to the city and suggests he should abandon his farm – and drown his wife in the nearby lake. The man then plans to murder his wife during a trip in their rowing boat. But things turn out differently: the wife flees from her boat, and the man finally realizes what a terrible crime he was about to commit. The two take a streetcar to the city. There, they reconcile and spend a beautiful and careless day. But on their trip home, disaster strikes: During the storm, their boat trips over and although the desperate man assembles a search party, the wife can not be found and is presumed dead. Shortly afterwards, his lover from the city arrives, believing the man did actually murder his wife. Full of rage, he attacks her. Virtually in the last moment, he is interrupted by the news that his wife is well and alive, and he lets go of the woman. The woman leaves the countryside, and the man and his wife are happily reunited.
