Many people have gathered for the burial of the mayor Virgilio in a Sicilian village. But winegrower Pasquale does not take part in the funeral. Once Virgilio's best friend, the two had been quarrelling for years. But now the deceased appears to him in the village square. Can they still reconcile? The only witness to this encounter is Nardino, who once came to the village as a foundling.
