Ute Hirschberg was born in Windhoek, South West Africa, in 1962 and attended the School of Film at the Royal College of Art in London in 1984 and the National Film School in Lodz from 1987 to 1989. She has worked as a freelance director, writer and producer in Berlin since 1990. Her short films are "Die Verwandlung", "Clouds", "Gabriel", "Pozegnanie", "Laura" (TV), "Spuren", "Familie Joldic in Witten" (TV) and her feature debut "Paula und das Glueck" (1998).
