A pope dies and a new one must be elected. In the end, it will be someone who was never supposed to become pope. What appears to be a sacred procedure carried out by princes of the church of integrity, even if it sometimes takes days – until finally white smoke rises as it has for centuries, habemus papam – turns out here to be a highly intriguing criminal case, a game of power played in silence and dim light. Magnificent images and an excellent lead actor, Ralph Fiennes, as the leader of the conclave, along with Isabella Rossellini as Sister Agnes, guide us through a truly sinister game of power struggles.
