André Nitzschke received his school-leaving certificate in 1982 and worked as a freelance writer, actor, assistant director and director for theatre in the former GDR from 1984-1988. He began studying Directing at the Academy for Film & Television (HFF) in Babelsberg and became a master student of Frank Beyer at Berlin"s Academy of Arts in 1993. He directed the documentary "Wenn man alte Baeume verpflanzt" in 1987 and was author of "Die Abenteuer des Hugo Wassertropfen auf der Erde" for the DEFA Animation Studio. His 1991 short feature "Abschied" was nominated for the Student Oscar in 1992. His other films are: "Was bleibt" (documentary, 1990); "Entfernungen" (short feature, 1990); "Entwurzelt - Menschen der Lausitzer Bergbauregion" (TV documentary, 1992); "Heller Tag" (full-length feature, 1994).
