The film shows Käthe KoIlwitz's work on her famous anti-war monument and her reflections on the creation of a work of art. She loses her beloved son Peter during the First World War. She begins to work against the pain, on a monument to her son. She turns against the war, becomes politically active for the left, paints the starving, the mothers who can no longer feed their children. In 1932, when the monument group was placed in a Belgian military cemetery, they were already marching again in Germany. In 1939, her grandson Peter was killed in action and she painted the leaf of the mother who hid her children, the seedlings, under her skirt and said, "No!
