Biography

Patrick Büchting was born in Frankfurt/Main and grew up in Bonn. Inspired by his parents' vacation videos, he made his first short film at the age of ten with friends and toys about "teddy bears who have to save Christmas". After a year abroad in Vancouver, Canada, where he graduated first in his film class, he later said in an interview, "From that moment on, I wanted to make movies."

Returning to Germany, he graduated from high school at the age of 17 and began studying film at the Dieburg Media Campus of the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt. When asked why he didn't go straight to film school, Büchting told the Frankfurter Rundschau: "[In Darmstadt] you learn directing as well as production, camera, editing and screenplay, while other programs in different cities specialize in one of these areas. For me, it was best to be able to learn everything. In the course of my studies, I realized that directing is what drives me the most."

After completing his bachelor's degree at Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences in 2019, he began a master's program there and simultaneously began studying film at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences. His final film in Dortmund, the coming-of-age story "Morgen irgendwo am Meer" (2023, based on the novel by Adriana Popescu), won awards at the 2023 Filmfest Bremen, the Schlingel Children's and Youth Film Festival in Chemnitz, and the Münster Film Festival. The theatrical release took place in June 2024
