Biography

Maria Spanring was born in 1982 in Kirchdorf an der Krems, Austria. From 2001 to 2003, she studied acting at the Schauspielhaus Salzburg, followed by a program at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). After completing her degree in 2007, she co-founded TWOF2 + dascollectiv in Vienna with Giovanni Jussi - a collaboration between the theatre group TWOF2 and the cultural association dascollectiv.

In addition to her work with the collective, Spanring has performed at a number of theatres over the years, including Schauspielhaus Salzburg (2009), Schauspielhaus Zürich (2011), and VBB Stadttheater Bozen (2017).

In mid-2022, she took on a new leadership role at Theater Schlachthaus Bern (Switzerland), sharing the position with Lisa Marie Fix and Ute Sengebusch. In 2023, the leadership structure was consolidated, with Spanring and Sengebusch continuing as co-directors.

After appearing in several short and mid-length films, Spanring took on her first leading role in a feature-length production in 2022: in "Chaos und Stille" ("Chaos and Silence") , she portrayed a pianist and expectant mother who, together with her partner, develops a complex and increasingly unsettling relationship with their mysterious landlady. The film premiered in October 2024 and was released in German cinemas in June 2025.
