Biography

Levin Peter was born in 1985 in Jena (then GDR). He made his first documentary film in 2007 together with Jonas Ginter and Albrecht Schuch in São Paulo, Brazil: "Prestes Maia", about the largest house occupation in the history of Latin America. In 2010, the film won the MDR Young Talent Award.

In September 2008, Peter began studying documentary film at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy. During his studies he made several short films that were screened at international festivals. His feature-length diploma film "Hinter dem Schneesturm" ("Beyond the Snowstorm", 2015), in which he investigates his grandfather's war experiences, was awarded Best Documentary Film at the First Steps Awards and the Sehsüchte Potsdam Festival. He was also nominated for the German Film Critics' Award.

In 2016 Levin Peter founded the production company Raumzeitfilm in Vienna together with his partner Elsa Kremser, whom he met during his studies. For the treatment of their first, currently still unrealised, feature film "Der grüne Wellensittich" they received the Kompagnon Script Prize at the Berlinale 2017. In the following year, the couple co-directed the documentary "Space Dogs", about the street dogs of Moscow and the street dog Laika, who was the first mammal sent into space by the Russian space agency in 1957. "Space Dogs" premiered in Switzerland at the Locarno Film Festival in 2019 and was screened at numerous other festivals around the world. At the Viennale 2019, "Space Dogs" won the Vienna Film Prize for Best Austrian Film. At the FIDOCS in Santiago de Chile the film received a Special Jury Award. "Space Dogs" was released in German cinemas in autumn 2020.
