Biography

Jörg Herrmann, born in 1963, graduated from the University of Rostock with a degree in marine engineering and then worked in research. After attending a course in videography at the Rostock Institute for New Media in 1995/1996, he pursued a different career path. In 1996, he helped establish the Rostocker Stadtkulturfernsehen (Rostock City Culture Television) as a cameraman and editor. In 1997, he realized non-fiction film projects as writer and director with his own production company, Dancing Image Production. His focus has always been on music, art and history, especially on aspects of the Nazi era and the history of the GDR.

Herrmann's films include: "Wenn man schon ein Schiff hat..." (2000), a half-hour documentary about a voyage on a 26-meter cutter; "Der Traum vom Fliegen - Ernst Heinkel" (2007); "Einen Namen hast du da nicht gehabt" (2008), about the Stasi remand prison in Neustrelitz during the late GDR; and "Ungehorsam als Tugend" (2009), about the Wehrmacht prison in Anklam and military justice during the Nazi era. He also produced three short films on "Macht & Ohnmacht – Die Staatssicherheit in Rostock" (2013) for the presentation and educational work of the Rostock Memorial for the victims of German dictatorships. In addition, the feature-length documentary "Hohe Kunst auf's platte Land - 50 Jahre Kunsthalle Rostock" (2020) was produced in his hometown.

Over the years, Jörg Herrmann has also produced numerous reports, promotional films, music videos and concert recordings. Between 2000 and 2021, he worked as a media educator for various institutions, educational providers and associations, including the Rostock Institute for New Media and the "Grenzen überwinden" project at the Werkstattschule in Rostock.

At the Dokfest Kassel in November 2023, Herrmann's documentary feature "Sonntagskind - Die Schriftstellerin Helga Schubert" premiered, a cinematic portrait of the 83-year-old, very active author. The regular theatrical release took place in January 2024.
