Biography
Born in Surabaya, Indonesia, he studied graphic design in his home city and film at the Jakarta Institute of Art. In 2005, his short film "Kara, the Daughter of a Tree" became the first Indonesian film to be selected for the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes. His debut feature, "Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly", received the FIPRESCI award at Rotterdam while "Postcards from the Zoo" screened in the Berlinale Competition and won the Edward Yang New Talent Award at the Asian Film Awards. In 2021, his feature film "Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash" won the Golden Leopard at Locarno.
