Anna Hepp was born on 30 March 1977 in Marl. From 1996 to 1998 she studied education and philosophy in Essen, followed by an apprenticeship as a photographer. After graduating in 2001, Hepp began working as a photographer in the fields of people, reportage and medical photography. In 2003 she began studying at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, where she graduated with distinction in 2009 in the field of film and art. Her 26-minute diploma film "Ein Tag und eine Ewigkeit" ("A Day and an Eternity"), about a day in her grandmother's life, received awards at numerous festivals, among them the KurzFilmFestival Hamburg, the European Short Film Festival at MIT in Boston (USA) and the Film and Video Festival in Beijing (China).
In her one-hour documentary film "Rotkohl und Blaukraut" ("Turkish Kraut", 2011) Hepp portrayed two families with a German-Turkish background living in the Ruhr area. The film celebrated its world premiere at the Berlinale 2011 in the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section. At the Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival 2012, Hepp presented "Ich möchte lieber nicht" ("I Would Prefer Not To"), a 15-minute portrait of the former head of Frankfurt's cultural department Hilmar Hoffmann. In the same year she received a scholarship from the Goethe-Institut in Porto Alegre, Brazil, as 'Artist in Residence'. There she shot the short documentary "To the old People of Porto Alegre".
In 2015 Hepp began preparing an artistic film portrait of Edgar Reitz. The three-day shooting took place in autumn 2017. The finished film with the title "800 Mal Einsam - ein Tag mit dem Filmemacher Edgar Reitz" ("800 Times Lonely - One Day with German Filmmaker Edgar Reitz") celebrated its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival 2019. The German theatrical release was in March 2020. Besides her work as filmmaker and photographer, Anna Hepp has been giving workshops in photography and film since 2010.
