Summary
Laurence in the Land of Liars
Laurence, an enterprising lad and gifted mouth-organ player, discovers with his raft an island full of odd things: the royal hunting party sits back-to-front on their horses, the cats bark, the dogs miaow. Just by paying with genuine gold coins instead of forged money, Laurence throws suspicion on himself.
From now on, a spy is always close on his heels. Luckily, Laurence makes some friends who help him: the sketched cat, Hinze, who is brought to life by a magic puff from Laurence; the rag-and-bones man who is constantly rushing backwards and forwards; indomitable Aunt Martha who repeatedly endeavours to teach her cats to miaow and, above all, her short-tempered niece, Eliza, with whom Laurence falls in love at first sight. After many a strange adventure, the two of them solve the mystery of the countryÍs language of lies and of the reigning trio which consists of the brown-locked king with his dreams of the sea, the avaricious minister and the captain who is constantly feeding his face.
