Summary
Southern Germany, 1984. The US military base is right next door. Fear of nuclear war is growing. At home, Frieda, an 11-year-old dreamer, senses that her parents are hiding something from her. As the Cold War draws closer, she discovers a clue: Aneke – a sister she never knew she had. Frieda uses her imagination to fight back against the lies of the adults and the world. When Aneke enters Frieda’s reality, a family order begins to crumble, one that can only endure as long as no one asks questions. Told radically from a child’s perspective, the film follows a family across three generations. What has been left unspoken lives on in others. Frieda’s fantastical images reach toward what has been repressed.
