El Cantor
Film biography of the Chilean folk singer Victor Jara, called "El Cantor", directed by the musician and socialist Dean Reed, who also plays the leading role. Jara supported the socialist Salvador Allende and his people′s front coalition Unidad Popular during the 1960s and 1970s with his songs and performances. His song "Venceremos" became the hymn of the movement. But the partly hidden, partly open attacks by reactionary forces already foreshadowed the 1973 coup and General Pinochet′s CIA-supported, violent takeover. Pinochet′s henchmen then pursued, tortured, and murdered Jara.
