Summary

An immigrant drama shifting between scenic mountain views and city impressions: During a hiking tour with the American millionaire heiress Lilian, daring lumberjack Tonio Feuersinger and his friend Jörg are surprised by an avalanche. Lilian and Tonio survive, but Jörg dies in the snowslide. Nevertheless, Tonio′s lust for adventure remains untamed, and soon he leaves his native home – and his faithful love Barbl – for America. Arriving in New York, he wants to visit Lilian and her father. But since the two have not returned from their world trip yet, Tonio has to find his way alone in a foreign and hostile place. Although he finally finds a friend in the unemployed worker Jimmy, Tonio sinks into poverty and despair. When he and Jimmy assist during a boxing fight in Madison Square Garden, Tonio accidentally meets Lilian and her father. They celebrate their reunion, and Lilian confesses her love for Tonio. But Tonio has realized, that he belongs home and to Barbl. His unexpected return coincides with a traditional celebration in the village, and during the dance Tonio finally finds Barbl. The two are reunited in a loving embrace.
